Orphan teams in dynasty leagues: take one or fill one

An orphan team is a fantasy roster in an ongoing dynasty or keeper league whose manager quit, which the commissioner then hands to a new manager as-is. The incoming manager inherits the players, the rookie draft picks, any contract and salary obligations the league runs, the remaining FAAB, and the win-loss record. Nothing is redrafted.

That last part is the whole subject. Every other open spot starts you level with the room. An orphan starts you inside somebody else's decisions, and the price should reflect that. Every deadline, price and count below was checked on August 29, 2026.

What is an orphan team in fantasy sports?

The definition is stable across the sites that sell them. Apex Fantasy Leagues, live on August 29, 2026, calls an orphan "a fantasy football team in an ongoing dynasty league that has been abandoned by its owner." DataForce Fantasy Football and FantasyPros word it almost identically.

An opening counts as an orphan only when three things are true: the league is already running, the previous manager is gone, and the roster stays intact waiting for a replacement. That rules out startup leagues and redraft openings, where everybody begins level. An orphan is the only opening type where the seat has a history attached, which is why it is the only one that gets negotiated.

Why do dynasty and keeper leagues produce orphans?

Redraft leagues cannot produce orphan teams, because every roster dissolves at the end of the season and everyone drafts again from scratch. Dynasty and keeper leagues carry a roster across years, and that carry is what a burned-out manager leaves behind. Two mechanisms decide when an orphan surfaces. On a paid platform, a renewal deadline does it. FFPC's dynasty rules orphan a team when its owner fails to renew by the February 28 deadline, and put renewal historically at 85 to 90 percent of owners. Apex Fantasy Leagues requires renewal by May 1 "so many orphan teams become available around that time." DataForce Fantasy Football says its deadline lands in May, and that "much of May and early June are spent finding new homes for orphans." Masters Fantasy Football Leagues runs an annual mass release it calls The Great Orphaning, on the Sunday after Father's Day, against a stated base of over 800 dynasty leagues and more than 9,600 franchises at a renewal rate above 90 percent.

A private home league has no deadline and no button. Somebody stops setting lineups in January, the commissioner spends two months hoping they come back, and the ask goes out whenever that hope runs out. Home-league orphans appear all year. Platform orphans appear in waves.

What should an orphan team listing disclose?

The pattern in every row is the same. The commissioner knows the answer and is deciding whether to volunteer it. Volunteering it is what makes the rest believable.

What should you check before taking over an orphan team?

Four questions are standard and every decent orphan guide covers them: is the league alive (ask for last season's trade count, not an adjective), what do the rookie picks look like by year, why did the last manager leave, and are one or two teams hoarding every good asset. A league with no trades and no chat for six weeks is finished whatever the standings say.

Three more are the ones nobody asks, and they decide the price:

1. What is owed, and by whom? Ask whether the current season's dues are paid, who paid them, and what you owe next. If the departed manager already paid, that credit should follow the team to you rather than go back to them. Make the commissioner say which it is.
2. What are the contract, cap and FAAB obligations? In a salary or contract league the numbers belong to the team, not the manager, so you inherit the cap situation and whatever FAAB is left. Superflex football leagues are the sharpest version: a roster with no startable quarterback is worth far less than the same roster with one.
3. What happens if the league folds? A rebuild needs three more seasons to pay off. Ask how many years the league has run, how many founding managers are still in it, and what the written rule is for winding up and paying out. If there is no written rule, that is the answer.

What is an orphan team worth, and what should you pay?

In dynasty football there are public value charts. KeepTradeCut, FantasyCalc and DynastyProcess all publish numeric player values and trade calculators, so you can total a roster, total the picks, and argue from a number instead of a feeling.

In fantasy basketball there is no equivalent. As of August 2026 none of those three covers the NBA, and no crowdsourced NBA dynasty value chart has the adoption to work as a common currency. So a basketball orphan gets valued by argument: the roster's age curve, how many of its players you would actually start in a 9-cat league, and what the league's own recent trades went for. Ask for the trade log. It is the closest thing to a price index the league has.

Then the discount. As of August 29, 2026, FFPC's dynasty marketplace runs "Discounted > 50%" as a standing filter and its $77 dynasty tier can only be entered by buying an orphan, with no deposit due. Apex Fantasy Leagues puts the saving against a new startup at about 50 percent, because the deposit is already paid. DataForce Fantasy Football tells bidders to offer roughly half the deposit for an ordinary team, 10 percent for one with no valuable assets, and runs a giveaway at $1 for anything still unsold.

Translate that carefully, because it is a football market built on deposits. In the free and sub-$50 basketball leagues on the forums there is no deposit to discount, so the negotiable goods are rookie picks, a waived season, and commissioner concessions, not dollars.

How should a commissioner price and pitch an orphan?

Orphans sit for one reason, and it is almost never the roster. It is the listing charging startup money for a rebuild and hoping nobody notices. Four levers:

• Cut or waive the first season. If the departed manager already paid, say so plainly. That is a free year you can hand over without touching the prize pool.
• Add draft capital. The Footballguys guide suggests the 1.13, the last pick of the first rookie round in a 12-team league, as compensation for taking an orphan, with one condition: get league approval first. Handing out picks without asking is how you lose the room.
• Run a dispersal draft instead. If two or more teams are open, pool their players and picks and let the incoming managers draft. Footballguys adds a variation worth stealing: let existing managers opt their own rosters in too. It refreshes the league and makes the open seats better. Getting several managers into one draft room mid-season is its own problem, so consider running it as a slow draft, with a pick clock measured in hours instead of seconds.
• Shrink the league. If you cannot fill them, downsizing from 14 to 12 and redistributing the players is a real option, not a failure.

Take a deposit for next season either way. That separates a manager who wants a rebuild from one who wants a free year. And write down what you did and why. Existing managers accept "the team had no firsts and a bottom-three roster, so we gave the 1.13 and half dues" far better than a quiet discount they find out about later.

How does the team actually change hands?

The mechanism is the same everywhere, because the roster and the picks stay attached to the team rather than to the account. On Sleeper the commissioner unassigns the old manager in Member Settings, invites you, then assigns you to that team slot, and Sleeper's support documentation notes this does not affect the players or draft picks. On ESPN the League Manager uses Edit Team Managers to remove the old manager and invite the new one, and the same flow covers fantasy basketball. On Fantrax the commissioner reassigns the owner from Manage Members.

Confirm two things before you pay: that you have full roster access under your own account, and that waiver position, FAAB and contract designations came across intact. Sleeper does not run salaries or contracts natively, so a Sleeper contract league is a spreadsheet the commissioner keeps by hand. Ask to see it.

When do NFL dynasty orphan teams become available?

Between February and June, and the renewal deadlines above are the mechanism: FFPC at February 28, Apex Fantasy Leagues at May 1, DataForce Fantasy Football in mid-May, Masters Fantasy Football Leagues releasing in one batch on the Sunday after Father's Day. Season ends, people decide, teams get released. By late August the paid inventory is picked over, and the Masters orphan page on August 29, 2026 read "Sorry, there are no teams available at this time." When do NBA dynasty orphan teams become available?

The basketball offseason, roughly late June through September, is when supply is heaviest, and it is happening now. On August 29, 2026, page one of the Fantrax NBA league-finder forum held twenty threads dated between August 13 and August 29. Nine were commissioners seeking a replacement manager, naming orphans outright, or organizing a dispersal draft. Seven of those nine said dynasty in the title, and the buy-ins named in them ran from free to $60.

That is one page on one day, so read it as a snapshot, not a season-long count. It does cut against the common claim that basketball orphans are mainly a mid-season thing. Both are true: private leagues shed managers mid-season, and the offseason is when commissioners get around to advertising the seat.

The gap worth knowing is coverage. On the same day we pulled US search results for "orphan team fantasy," "what is an orphan team in fantasy" and "orphan teams fantasy basketball." Every editorial page ranking for those three queries was about fantasy football. The basketball query returned two social posts, several football marketplaces and one directory. Who holds the money when you take over an orphan?

Ask before you send anything. Dynasty buy-ins are usually held by LeagueSafe, by Fantrax Treasurer when the league runs on Fantrax, or by one manager's PayPal or Venmo. Those are three levels of protection and the third is just trust. Get the payout split in writing, confirm whether the departed manager's payment credits the team or refunds to them, and ask what happens to the pot if the league folds mid-rebuild.
