How to fill an open spot in your fantasy league

To fill an open spot in a fantasy league, post nine facts a stranger can filter on: sport and season, platform, format (dynasty, keeper, or redraft), opening type (orphan team, startup league, or redraft opening), scoring, league size, buy-in and who holds it, draft date and draft type, and time zone. Post it somewhere that allows recruiting. r/findaleague takes standalone posts, r/DynastyFF takes them only inside its Tuesday and Thursday megathreads, and r/fantasyfootball removes them entirely. Then take the listing down the day it fills.

Fantasy football league openings come in three shapes and each one fills differently. A redraft seat fills in days during August. A startup needs every setting locked before you recruit. A dynasty orphan needs a discount or draft capital, because you are asking a stranger to inherit someone else's mistakes.

Step 1. What to put in a fantasy league listing

Nobody is reading your league's origin story. They are scanning for the settings that rule your league in or out. Write these down first:

1. Sport and season. Fantasy basketball 2026-27, fantasy football 2026.
2. Platform. Yahoo, ESPN, Sleeper, Fantrax, CBS, MyFantasyLeague, NFBC, FFPC.
3. Format. Dynasty, keeper, or redraft.
4. Opening type. An orphan team, a startup league, or a redraft opening in a returning league.
5. Scoring. PPR, half PPR, or standard for football. H2H 9-cat, 8-cat, roto, or points for basketball.
6. League size. 10, 12, 14, 16 teams.
7. Buy-in and custody. The dollar amount, and who holds the money.
8. Draft date and draft type. Live snake, auction, slow, linear, or no draft at all if the roster is inherited.
9. Region or time zone. A 9pm Eastern live draft rules out most of Europe and all of Australia.

Those nine map to what a filterable board indexes. They also map to what LeagueSafe Classifieds lets people filter on, which we checked on 2026-08-29: season, fantasy service, entry-fee range, draft-date range, plus format and scoring tags. If a fact is not in your post, the people filtering on it never see you.

A working listing reads about like this:

Fantasy basketball 2026-27, 12-team Fantrax dynasty, H2H 9-cat, one orphan team open. $50 buy-in held in Fantrax Treasurer, waived for the first season on this roster. Slow rookie draft starts Sept 14, Australia-friendly, no live draft required. League is in year six, active chat, payouts on time. Roster is a rebuild: two good young pieces, no 2027 first.

Five sentences. Every filter answered, including the bad news.

Step 2. Orphan team, startup league, or redraft opening

These are three different asks, and blurring them wastes everyone's time.

A redraft opening is the easiest fill. Somebody wants one more league this season, the commitment ends in January, and the roster is not yet a problem.

A startup league sells the settings and the co-managers, because there is nothing else to sell yet. Lock every setting before you recruit. Startups that recruit with rules still open fill slowly, because a player cannot tell yet whether the league fits.

An orphan team sells a roster somebody else already broke. That is a harder sell, and it deserves its own step.

Step 3. How to make an orphan team worth taking

The instinct is to talk the roster up. Do the opposite. Experienced dynasty managers read a roster in ninety seconds and then trust nothing else you said, because they can see the gap.

Discounting is the normal move, not an embarrassing one. On 2026-08-29 the first page of the FantasySharks openings forum carried orphan listings offering waived current-season dues, a $0 orphan price, a cut annual rate, and two free years. That is a whole page of commissioners deciding the same thing.

Three levers do the work:

• Discount or waive the first-season buy-in. A rebuild costs the new owner two seasons of losing. Charging full price for that is why orphans sit.
• Add draft capital. An extra second or third rounder in the next rookie draft is cheap for the league and reads as real value.
• State what happened. Did the previous owner trade the roster to pieces, or just stop setting lineups? Are dues current? Is the rest of the league still trading, or is the chat dead?

Step 4. Where to post fantasy football league openings

Most commissioners lose a week here. Half the obvious places remove recruiting posts, and the removal is quiet enough that you assume nobody was interested.

Reddit, rules and moderator statements read 2026-08-29:

• r/findaleague is a dedicated cross-sport subreddit for recruiting and looking-to-join posts. Standalone posts are allowed, and through draft season it runs a dated daily classifieds thread for leagues drafting that day. League posts need a minimum comment karma, which the sub added to cut down scams. The daily thread skips that check, so it carries its own warning about protecting your time and money.
• r/DynastyFF runs Find-A-League megathreads on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Its moderators remove recruiting and looking-for-a-league posts made outside those threads.
• r/fantasyfootball removes recruiting posts under its Rule 1, which covers any thread specific to your team or league.
• r/fantasybball keeps a find-a-league megathread for the NBA season, posted 2026-08-07, for advertising a league or searching for one.

Discord is the highest-trust venue and the least searchable one. The Fantasy Footballers' Discord is free to join and runs a League Finder channel in its FootClan Leagues section, though some of what sits in there is reserved for paying FootClan supporters. Fantasy basketball communities such as FBI, Sports Ethos, Dizzle Dynasty, and Old Man Sports run league-finder channels inside their Discords; you need an invite to see them, and the channel names vary. The catch is the same everywhere. Your post is visible until the next wave of messages pushes it off screen, and nobody can search for it after that.

Platform browsers are weaker than commissioners expect. On ESPN, public leagues are commissioned by ESPN itself, so your custom league cannot be listed there. Yahoo is friendlier: its own free and prize leagues are public, and a user-created custom league starts private but can be opened to public joining, which puts it in Yahoo's custom-league browse. Sleeper is blunt about it, saying "we don't have a public list of leagues for users to join," though you can publish a league to matchmaking from the mobile app. Fantrax is the exception and runs a real browser of user-created public leagues, sortable by scoring, draft type, and draft time.

Classifieds, forums, and Facebook are free and deep, and that is also the problem. LeagueSafe Classifieds is free to list on. The FFToday find-a-league forum held over seven thousand topics across more than a hundred pages on 2026-08-29, and the Footballguys equivalent has no filters at all, only stickied warnings about what you may not post. Facebook hosts several league-finder groups for the same purpose. On all of them your thread title is the only searchable surface, so it has to carry the buy-in, team count, scoring, platform, and draft date on its own.

Structured boards are the last option, and there is more than one. LeagueFinder describes itself as free to browse, join, and post on, filters listings by platform, size, scoring, draft type, and payment holder, and says it has both a mark-filled action and a 30-day listing expiry. League Openings, this site, is the other one, built around the same idea for NBA and NFL. It launched in August 2026, so expect a smaller and cleaner set of listings, not a bigger one.

Whatever you pick, do not keep reposting the same league in the same forum. Forums sort by last reply, so a bump on your existing thread outranks a fresh duplicate, and duplicates split your replies across threads you then have to read separately. Checking the FantasySharks openings forum on 2026-08-29, its first page held several sets of duplicate threads for the same league posted days apart, and the duplicates were not drawing replies.

Step 5. How to screen people who want to join

Filling a spot with the wrong person is worse than leaving it open, especially in dynasty. But heavy-handed vetting reads badly, and it should. Commissioners burn managers too, over payouts, punitive vetoes, and secret second rosters. Managers know it.

Three questions get you most of the way:

1. What leagues do you run now, and how long have you been in them? Longevity tells you more than the answer's content.
2. What is your platform history? A profile on the platform your league uses, with visible past seasons, is a real signal.
3. What is your week like during the season? You are asking about lineup-setting and trade responses, not their job.

Then set one condition and hold it: the buy-in is paid before the draft, and an unpaid spot reopens. Say that in the listing. It is the cleanest filter there is against people who join and vanish, and it costs you nothing to enforce.

Answer the same questions about yourself before anyone asks. How many seasons the league has run, how active the chat is, how many trades happened last year, whether payouts went out on time and how. A commissioner who volunteers that is screening in both directions, which is the version of vetting this audience respects.

Step 6. Who should hold the league buy-in

If there is a buy-in, decide custody before you recruit. You will be asked, and a wrong answer costs you good applicants.

Fantrax Treasurer says it is completely free, with no processing fees for deposit or withdrawal, and that the commissioner can appoint any league member as treasurer. That is Fantrax's own wording. Members pay by card or PayPal. Have one person test a payment before you promise the league a net number, so any card surcharge shows up before the season does. LeagueSafe offers two pay-in options: a free one that accepts e-checks only, and a flexible one that also accepts cards. Its fee help page does not name the flexible rate; its terms page does, at 4.5% plus 10 cents per transaction. Quote your league the terms page, not the help article. All three pages checked 2026-08-29.

Venmo or PayPal to one person is the third option, and it is the one applicants are most nervous about. If that is your setup, say so plainly instead of leaving it unanswered.

League Openings holds none of this. Custody is a field on a listing describing what your league already uses, not a service. Same with vetting: we do not vet leagues or vouch for any commissioner, paid or free. That is in the full rules, and it should shape how much trust anyone extends to a listing, including yours.

Step 7. When to take the listing down

This is the step everybody skips, and it is why the boards fill with dead posts. On 2026-08-29 the first page of the FantasySharks openings forum still carried threads that the poster had relabelled as already filled, because editing the title by hand is the only way to retire a post there. The Footballguys forum has no mechanism at all.

A stale listing costs you twice. It wastes the time of people who message you about a spot that is gone, and it teaches everyone reading that board to distrust every listing on it, including the live ones.

On League Openings a listing hides itself 30 days after you last confirmed it is open, or 7 days after its draft date, whichever comes first. Reminder emails land on day 23 and day 28 with a one-click "still open" button. Reopening within the same season is free. Managers ask to join through a form, never a public invite link. We email you the request with reply-to set to the sender, and your address stays hidden.

Step 8. The best time of year to recruit

Demand for open spots swings hard by season, and knowing where you are in the cycle changes how hard you should push.

We pulled Google Ads US monthly search estimates through DataForSEO on 2026-08-29 for the phrase "fantasy football league openings." Across the previous twelve months the estimate ran between 10 and 210 a month, peaking in August with September second, and nine of those months sat at 40 or below. The bigger term "join a fantasy football league" has the same shape and more room: 2,900 in August, 10 in February. Those are modeled estimates, not counted searches, so read the shape and ignore the decimals.

That is a small query. The calendar underneath it is the useful part, and the rest of this list is what we have watched happen on the boards rather than anything we measured:

• NFL redraft is a two-week job in late August and a much harder one in October. If you have an opening now, post it now.
• NFL dynasty orphans move between February and June, after the season ends and before the next one starts taking attention back.
• NBA orphan and startup spots surface from late June through September, which is why r/fantasybball's find-a-league megathread went up on August 7 this year. Redraft interest then builds to opening night.

Off-peak, the nine facts matter more, not less. In August a vague post often fills anyway. In January it will not fill at all.

Step 9. Why nobody is answering your listing

Give a listing a week before you touch it, then change one thing at a time so you learn something.

Wrong price is the usual culprit, and it is the easiest to test. Next is the draft date, either past or missing. Then the format itself: if you are asking a stranger to take a 2-and-11 rebuild at full price, no amount of reposting fixes that. If you are getting messages but no commitments, the problem is the screening step, not the listing.

If it is October and the spot is still open, the honest answer is often to fold the roster into another team or contract the league for a season rather than hand a dynasty seat to whoever is left.

What it costs to list an opening here

Listing a spot is $5 flat, per season, per sport. Through November 30, 2026, the code DRAFTSEASON waives that fee, so the listing is free, though a free listing has to be confirmed by email before it goes live. Boosting a listing higher on the board is separate, optional, and always paid.
